Where to Use Traffic Cones

2020年11月26日
If you’ve ever looked at a series of traffic cones along the side of a road or highway, the formation might seem random. Perhaps you’ve even seen construction workers putting them in place. Nevertheless, the type of traffic cones and the size are important for various situations. The key, in all cases, is visibility. On highways and streets, you want the cones to be visible, while in minor outdoor and indoor locations, you want the cones to also be visible in the setting but not too much of an obstruction. As cones come in designated sizes and weights, having the appropriate ones for the setting is necessary.

The most common use for traffic cones is by a street or highway. These particular sizes are in the large to medium range. Cones needed for visibility on a street are 28 inches tall and seven pounds. The next level up, highways, needs cones that are either 28 or 36 inches tall and ten pounds. However, if a lighter cone, such as a local street, seven pound cone, is the only type available, this can be weighted down by sandbags or heavier stands and used instead. Anything else larger than 36 inches and 10 pounds, additionally, calls for a traffic barrel, which, too, is orange and with reflective strips.

Traffic cones aren’t always needed on the highway or street level. In many cases, they’re used much like barriers in doors. Need to show a path for pedestrians? Line smaller cones along the sidewalk or inside of a building. The sizes needed in these cases include 12-inch tall cones that weigh 1.5 pounds and 18-inch tall ones that weight three pounds. If you need something smaller, miniature cones, in sizes not regulated by the MUTCD, can be purchased for your needs.

The MUTCD, by the US Federal Highway Administration, lists all the regulations regarding traffic cones. Aside from the size, the cones need to be a visible color for the location. Outdoors, for example, often means orange, while fluorescent green and blue are also appropriate for indoor use.
